Perry Scientific is now AAALAC accredited!

Perry Scientific is now AAALAC accredited.

Perry Scientific offers customized preclinical research services to support the development of new drugs and devices through the various stages of development.

Perry Scientific’s facilities are now fully AAALAC and GLP compliant.  Our vivarium became AAALAC accredited in June 2007.

Our NIH and USDA registered facilities house most species of both large and small animals. We offer a broad range of preclinical services for biotech and device companies as well as leasing of vivarium facilities.

Preclinical and Vivarium Services

Perry Scientific specializes in preclinical animal studies. We have a complete range of services, animal models and surgical techniques. We are committed to quality and competitive prices with rapid turnaround.

We offer all required services to support early stage drug and device companies. These include most types of “in vivo” studies, including dermatology, oncology and toxicology models, as well as large animal and medical device and product testing. We offer a range of other services such as tissue culture, cell culture and antibody production.

We also offer vivarium services for small and large animals in which we lease animal and procedure rooms to biotech companies on a short- or long-term basis.

All our studies are performed at our new, state-of-the-art animal facility and 57 room vivarium located in San Diego, California.

Perry Scientific’s vivarium is a recently completed 57 room animal facility conveniently located in central San Diego; it is only a few minutes drive from most key biotech centers. It was custom built to our specifications and incorporates features required by USDA and NIH. Our vivarium services operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Perry Scientific offers a unique program to help you complete your preclinical animal studies. Depending on your budget and your requirements, we offer three different plans.

PLAN 1. This is the lowest cost approach, in which you rent an animal room in our vivarium for your company's exclusive use. You pay only a fixed monthly rental and your scientists can use this room as if it was part of your own laboratory. Your scientists perform their own procedures and supply their own equipment and disposables. We order, receive and house your animals for you. We supply full husbandry as well as complete oversight for the animals’ care and well being.

PLAN 2. With this approach, we supply an animal room for your exclusive use and we assist you in performing the procedures. We can supply any degree of assistance you need, from basic technical help through to full surgical and veterinarian assistance. You pay a monthly fee for the room and we bill you for the animals and disposables used in your experiments and for the technical assistance you use.

PLAN 3. For your projects that require our specialized expertise and equipment as well as needing the fastest turnaround, we offer a third approach. With this plan, we perform the entire study. We can follow your written protocol, or we can design the study for you. We do everything from start to finish, including purchasing the animals, performing the husbandry and all the technical, surgical and veterinarian work and writing the final report. Of course, as with any work we do, your scientists are always welcome to become involved with the study.

Perry Scientific offers PK studies on all species of animals. Our lowest cost studies are most commonly performed on rats or mice, but we also offer PK studies on large animals, as well as bio-availability, bio-distribution and bio-equivalence studies for new or experimental drugs. Standard drug efficacy testing can be performed in a variety of animal models using protocols supplied by you, or developed by us.

Perry Scientific is one of the most experienced CROs in preclinical diabetes research. We offer a number of different diabetes models for testing both new drugs and new formulations of insulin. We offer models in mice, rats and canines.

Perry Scientific’s preclinical oncology group has more experience with oncology and xenograft studies than virtually any other company. We create literally thousands of xenograft models each year in nude mice, SCID mice and nude rats. Perry Scientific is also a leader in the evaluation of new cancer agents in mice and rats exhibiting chemotherapy or radiation induced neutropenia.

We routinely create and evaluate the following animal models:

  • Subcutaneous xenograft models
  • Syngenic models
  • Angiogenesis models
  • Mammary fat pad models
  • Custom model development

We use the following rodent models:

  • Nude mice (human xenografts)
  • SCID mice (human xenografts)
  • Normal mice (syngenic tumors)
  • Immunodeficient rats (human xenografts)
  • Normal rats (syngenic tumors)

In vivo efficacy of test agents can be determined using a variety of dose schedules and routes including subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intravenous and oral gavage.

Perry Scientific carries a large library of human tumor and syngenic cell lines which are available for common malignancies including:

  • Breast: MDA MB-231, MCF7, MDA-MB-435, T-47D
  • Colon: KM12, HCT-15, COLO 205, HT29
  • Lung: NCI-H460, A549
  • Prostate: CRW22, LNCAP, PCC-3, DU-145
  • Melanoma: LOX-IMVI
  • Ovarian: SK-OV-3
  • Renal: CAKI-1, A498, SN12C

In addition to these, we can obtain almost any tumor line and form almost any xenograft you require.

Perry Scientific’s state-of-the-art facility specializes in performance of both GLP and non GLP toxicology studies. Non-GLP toxicology studies are intended to provide preliminary assessment of a drug’s safety. GLP toxicology studies are required as a prerequisite for filing an IND package, prior to Phase I clinical trials.

Perry Scientific offers extensive experience in the conduct of preclinical studies relevant to dermatology:

  • Wound healing
  • Inflammation
  • Dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Alopecia
  • Hair growth
  • Skin grafting (e.g., human skin to SCID mice)
  • Sensitization
  • Irritation
  • Many additional dermatological disorders

Perry Scientific offers a well established mouse tail model for evaluation of experimental psoriasis agents, together with a full range of treatment and histopathological services.

Perry Scientific’s recently completed large animal facility includes a state of the art operating room equipped with all standard equipment and a C arm fluoroscope for cardiac studies.

Our surgery expertise covers most standard procedures for laboratory animals including:

  • Cardiovascular
  • Stroke
  • Orthopedic
  • Neurological Aneurysm Inducement
  • Evaluation of medical devices and implants
  • General surgery

Perry Scientific offers all types of device and product testing, including bio-compatibility assessment in rodents, rabbits, pigs and other large animals. Device efficacy testing can be performed in a variety of animal models using protocols supplied by you, or developed by us. We also execute specific protocols for investigation of new devices and implants.

Histology and Pathology Services

Perry Scientific offers full histological services to support all its preclinical testing. We perform necropsies of the animals, prepare and trim the tissue samples, dehydrate and wax embed the samples. We then cut the wax blocks, and prepare and stain the slides. We offer all commonly available stains as well as specialty stains. Our services include general pathology, necropsy and histopathology, bacterial parasitology, serology, molecular diagnostics and electron microscopy.

Pricing and Scheduling

Perry Scientific provides high quality service and excellent results. We pride ourselves on our ability to complete all studies on time and on budget.

Our pricing is extremely competitive and, within reason, we always try to work within the budget you have available.

Because of the efficiency of our operation, and the large number of animal and procedure rooms in our vivarium, we can normally schedule your projects to start and finish exactly when you need them.
